SvelteKit vs Next.js 14: Real-world Performance Benchmarks

The Benchmark Setup

We built the exact same complex dashboard and marketing site using Next.js 14 (App Router) and SvelteKit 2.

Both were deployed to edge networks (Vercel) and tested using Lighthouse CI over 100 iterations to measure First Contentful Paint (FCP), Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), and Total Blocking Time (TBT).

Core Web Vitals Results

SvelteKit consistently outperformed Next.js in Total Blocking Time (TBT). Because Svelte compiles away the framework overhead, the JavaScript payload was 40% smaller on average, leading to a near-zero TBT on mobile devices.

Next.js 14 showed impressive improvements in LCP thanks to partial prerendering and aggressive caching, but the hydration cost still blocked the main thread slightly longer than SvelteKit.

When to choose which?

For pure performance and highly interactive UI, SvelteKit is our framework of choice. It provides exceptional developer experience without shipping heavy runtimes to the browser.

For ecosystems heavily reliant on React (like large corporate components), Next.js remains a powerhouse. However, our agency prioritizes SvelteKit for new enterprise projects to guarantee a perfect 100/100 Lighthouse score.
